Panthers Take Down Riverhounds in Exhibition Play, 2-1
4/10/2001
PITTSBURGH - The Pittsburgh Panthers men's soccer team took on the Pittsburgh Riverhounds in an exhibition game on April 10, and defeated the professional A-League soccer team, 2-1, at Penn-Trafford High School.
The Panthers took just five shots on the night but were able to convert two into goals. After a scoreless first half, junior Mark Sikora (Erie, Pa./Cathedral Prep) got the Panthers on the board with an unassisted goal in the 61st minute. However, the Riverhounds tied up the score just four minutes later when Joenal Castma beat Panther goalkeeper Justin Gaul (Huntington Valley, Pa./William Tennent) with a rebound off a shot by Nick Terlecky.
Junior Peter Veltri (Washington, Pa./Trinity) broke the tie and gave the Panthers the lead with a goal in the 75th minute. He beat Riverhounds keeper Brian Wells with a shot just inside the right post and was assisted by freshman Clay Haflich (Fort Collins, Colo./Poudre).
Gaul helped the Panthers to the win with five saves, while junior keeper Joe Conlan (Wallingford, Pa./Strath Haven) also saw time in goal. Additionally, Sikora and Veltri had two shots on goal apiece, and sophomore Toure Weaver (Upper Montclair, N.J./Montclair) had one.
The Panthers are now 3-0 against the Riverhounds in all-time exhibition play.
