PITTSBURGH-The 19th-ranked Pittsburgh wrestling team built a 29-0 lead over host Bloomsburg on Thursday night before completing the 35-9 win over the Huskies at Nelson Fieldhouse.
The Panthers won eight of the ten individual matches, including two by major decision and two by pinfall.
Jacob Lininger (Hummelstown, Pa./Lower Dauphin) got things started in the heavyweight class with a 3-0 victory over Bloomsburg's Robert Chalet. The win was Lininger's 17th of the season in 21 matches.
Pittsburgh got eight points in its next two matches with two major decision wins at 125 and 133 lbs. Mike May (Derry Area, Pa./Derry Area) handled Mike Collins easily with a 13-1 win at 125 lbs., and Shawn Amistade (Washington, Pa./Trinity) defeated Mark Piermettei, 15-3, to up the Panthers' lead to 11-0.
In the 141-pound match, Pittsburgh's Blaise Mucci (Blairsville, Pa./Derry Area) was able to pin Adam Castner at the 5:45 mark to earn six more points for the Panthers.
A forfeit victory for Justin Giovinco (Norristown, Pa./Plymouth-Whitemarsh) at 149 lbs. increased the Panthers' lead over the Huskies to 23-0 halfway through the match.
Freshman Donald Rush (Avella, Pa./Avella) scored a 5-3 win over B.J. Mikeska of the Huskies at 157 lbs., and redshirt junior Carl Fronhofer (Salem, N.Y./Salem) defeated Duane Bastress, 11-4, to give Pittsburgh its seventh straight individual win and a 29-0 lead.
The Huskies earned their nine points with wins in the 174 and 184-lb. weight classes. Josh Hewes beat the Panthers' Matt Catullo (Oakmont, Pa./Riverview), 12-7 at 174 lbs., and Rob Black (Pittsburgh, Pa./Fox Chapel), who was in for injured Dan Stine (Queensbury, N.Y./Queensbury) was pinned by Jason Johnson in the 184-lb. match at 4:01.
The Panthers' David Sandberg (Spokane, Wash./North Central) got six points back with a pinfall victory at 197 lbs. He pinned Andy Ludlow at the 5:27 mark to account for the final margin.
Pittsburgh is now 2-1 in dual meets and will be off until Dec. 29-30, when it competes in the Wilkes Open.
