Panthers Dominate St. Bonaventure, 197-46, in Home Opener

PITTSBURGH-In its first dual meet of the 2001-02 season, the Pittsburgh men's swimming and diving team showed no signs of slowing down with a 197-46 victory over St. Bonaventure at Trees Pool on Friday afternoon.
All 13 events were won by the Panthers, who are aiming for a sixth consecutive Big East Conference championship.
Sophomore Matthew Schwartz (Huntington, N.Y./Half Hollow Hills East) won the 1-meter diving competition with 194.05 points while senior teammate Blair Beal (Pittsburgh, Pa./Woodland Hills) took first place in the 3-meter event with 196.90 points.
The Panther swimmers started out with a win in the 200 Medley Relay as Ken Shelhorse (Gaithersburg, Md./Damascus), Randy Gertenbach (El Centro, Calif./Paradise Valley), Brian Bonczek (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley) and Raymond Brush (Katy, Texas/Katy/Nebraska) took the event with a time of 1:36.02.
Eric Limkemann (New Haven, Ind./Woodlan) took both distance freestyle events, winning the 500 and 1,000 for the Panthers with times of 4:43.31 and 9:29.12, respectively.
Senior Max von Bodungen (Malmo, Sweden/Borgarskolan) showed his versatility by taking the 200 freestyle and 100 butterfly events. He won the 200 free by over three seconds and took the 100 butterfly in a time of 50.15.
Other winners for the Panthers were Michael Demos (McKeesport, Pa./Elizabeth Forward) in the 50 Free (21.17), Brush in the 200 IM (1:55.65) and 100 Breast (57.24), Adam Webber (Lebanon, Pa./Cedar Crest) in the 100 Free (47.42), Steve Siler (Chicago, Ill./Westmont) in the 100 Back (51.12) and the team of Miah Heath (Estes Park, Colo./Estes Park), von Bodungen, Demos and Webber in the 200 Freestyle Relay.
Pittsburgh will open its Big East dual meet season tomorrow morning with a home meet against Syracuse. Diving starts at 10 a.m. in Trees Pool.
