PITTSBURGH - The Pittsburgh men's swimming and diving team hosted a tri-dual meet at Trees Pool, Jan. 21-22, that included Maryland and Big East Conference foe Villanova. The Panthers claimed victories over both teams, while Head Coach Chuck Knoles notched his 77th career dual meet win, making him Pittsburgh's all-time winningest coach in swimming and diving history (Richard Bradshaw held a record of 76-24 in 10 years as Pittsburgh head coach).
The Panthers defeated the Terps by a score of 199-154. Senior co-captain Mike Pron (Belle Meade, N.J./Hillsborough) placed first in three events, including the 200-yard breaststroke and both the 200 and 400 individual medleys. Fellow co-captain Brian Elko (Denville, N.J./Morris Knolls) also claimed three events: the 100 butterfly and the 100 and 200 backstrokes. Freshman Mike Grube (Drexel Hill, Pa./Upper Darby) had an outstanding performance as well, winning both the 50 and 100 freestyle events.
In diving, sophomores Michael Wells (Downingtown, Pa./Downingtown) and Blair Beal (Pittsburgh, Pa./Woodland Hills) placed first and second, respectively, on both the one- and three-meter boards.
Pittsburgh easily dominated the Wildcats, 275-64. The Panthers claimed first place in all but two of the 19 events. Both Pron and Elko succeeded once again in posting the fastest times against Villanova for a combined six first-place finishes, while Grube added yet another first place on the weekend in the 200 free.
Once again, Wells and Beal helped defeat the Wildcats by claiming the top two spots on both diving boards.
In the third dual meet of the weekend, Maryland defeated Villanova, 278-62.
Pittsburgh improves to 6-1 overall, and a perfect 4-0 in the Big East. The Panthers return to action when they travel to Penn State on Friday, Feb. 4.
