PITTSBURGH - The Pittsburgh softball team split a doubleheader with Wright State May 2 to mark the Panthers' final game of the 2000 season. Pittsburgh captured the 3-0 shutout in game one, but the host Raiders rallied for a 4-3 victory in game two.
In game one, the Panthers grabbed a 1-0 lead in the first on the strength of Lisa Collins' (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Mechanicsburg) RBI single that scored first baseman Tawni Yamauchi (Newbury Park, Calif./Newbury Park). Pittsburgh increased its lead to 3-0 in the top of the third with catcher Jacki Haar's (Naples, Fla./Lely) two-run home run, marking her eighth of the season. The Panthers held the Raiders scoreless through the remaining innings to preserve the shutout.
Freshman pitcher Nikki Gasti (Carmichaels, Pa./Carmichaels) picked up her 10th win of the season. She allowed just four hits and one walk while striking out three.
In game two, both teams mounted late surges in the seventh, but Wright State prevailed for the win.
The Raiders held a 2-0 advantage heading into the final inning but the Panthers put together three runs to go ahead, 3-2. Senior Lisa Backstrom (West Newton, Pa./Yough Senior) hit her first career home run to tie the score at two runs apiece. Yamauchi's RBI single four batters later gave Pittsburgh the go ahead run. Wright State, however, recorded two runs in the bottom of the inning on a walk with the bases loaded and an RBI single to take the 4-3 win.
Pittsburgh finished the season with a 21-28 overall record and a 4-12 mark in the Big East.
