Swimming And Diving Squads Defeat Duquesne

PITTSBURGH -- The Pittsburgh men's and women's swimming and diving teams hosted crosstown-rival Duquesne today in the final dual meet of the season at Trees Pool. The Panther men defeated the Dukes, 155-65, while the women claimed a 189-42 victory over Duquesne.
The men's team claimed 10 of the 13 events on the afternoon. Highlighting the victory was a first-place finish by senior Tim Tallman (Lindenwold, N.J./Camden Catholic) in the 50-yard freestyle. Sophomore Will Eden (Scottsdale, Ariz./Chaparral) and junior Craig Peterson (Washington, Pa./Trinity) recorded the fastest times in the 200 free and 200 individual medley, respectively.
Other first-place finishes for the Panthers were senior Jerry Koller (Bethel Park, Pa./Bethel Park) in the 100 free, sophomore Miah Heath (Estes Park, Colo./Estes Park) in the 500 free, senior Andy Cherep (Pittsburgh, Pa./Plum) in the 200 backstroke and sophomore Michael Wells (Downingtown, Pa./Downingtown) on the one-meter diving board.
The Pittsburgh women's team won all 13 events, led by freshman Lacey Hlavka (Fairfax Station, Va./Hayfield) who placed first in both the 1000 free and 200 back. Senior diver Jamie Tomazich (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) swept both the one- and three-meter boards, while fellow seniors Beth Grube (Drexel Hill, Pa./Upper Darby) and Liz Perry (Beufort, S.C./Ft. Lauderdale) claimed first in the 50 and 100 free, respectively.
Other first place finishes for the Panthers included freshman Rubi Cisneros (Monterrey, Mexico/Monterrey) in the 200 butterfly, freshman Niki Boyle (Live Oak, Fla./Suwanee) in the 200 IM, senior Kate Langdon (Houston, Texas/Clear Lake) in the 500 free and freshman Emily Colley (Pace, Fla./Pace) in the 200 free.
The men complete their dual season with a record of 7-2 (4-0 Big East), while the women hold a mark of 7-5 (3-1). The Panthers will compete in the 2000 Big East championships Feb. 17- 19 in Long Island, N.Y.
