PITTSBURGH - The Pittsburgh gymnastics team hosted Rutgers in an East Atlantic Gymnastics League matchup tonight at Fitzgerald Field House and fell to the Scarlet Knights by a score of 192.150-190.550.
It was a close meet after two rotations with Rutgers holding a narrow 96.85-96.80 lead over the Panthers. Pittsburgh achieved two individual season-high scores on vault, including freshman Nathalie Sulpher (Ottawa, Canada/Franco-Quest) who claimed first place on the event with a season-high (tied) 9.725. Senior Lisa Fronhofer (Salem, N.Y./Salem) followed in a tie for second with a season-best 9.70.
On the uneven bars, sophomore Raya Mullin (Runnemeade, N.J./Triton) won first place with a season-high score of 9.825. Both Danielle "Freddie" Alba (Philadelphia, Pa./Bishop McDevitt) and Samantha Salyers (Glen Ellyn, Ill./Glenbard West) finished tied for fourth place with scores of 9.775.
Rutgers took a three-point lead following the third rotation when the Panthers suffered a number of falls on the balance beam. However, the event was highlighted by freshman Heather Launse (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park) who scored a personal-best 9.675, three points better than her previous high and good for second place.
Fronhofer led the floor exercise with a score of 9.850, which also tied her season-best mark on the event and led the Panthers to a team season-high of 48.650.
Alba, who holds the school record in the all-around, competed in the event for the first time this season and claimed first place with a 38.450. Lieberman also competed in the all-around for the first time in her career and scored a 37.325, which included a season-high 9.675 on bars and a 9.700 on floor.
The Panthers move to 4-3 overall and 1-1 in the EAGL, while Rutgers is 8-2 and 1-1 in the league. Pittsburgh will travel to Michigan State on Saturday, Feb. 19.
