PITTSBURGH - Sixteen second-half points from sophomore and North Versailles native Brooke Stewart helped lift the University of Pittsburgh women's basketball team to an 89-60 victory over visiting Shelen-Russia in an exhibition matchup tonight at Fitzgerald Field House.
Stewart (North Versailles, Pa./East Allegheny) totaled 19 points on the night, which included four 3-pointers, and was one of four Panthers to reach double-figures.
Pittsburgh trailed 27-24 at 8:27 mark of the first half. But senior Monique Toney's (Yorba Linda, Calif./Cerritos Valley Christian) jump shot moments later sparked a 17-3 run that gave the Panthers the lead for good and sent Pittsburgh into intermission with a 41-32 halftime advantage.
The Panthers continued their momentum, going on a 14-4 run to start the second half. During the span, the Pittsburgh defense held Shelen-Russia without a basket for the first three and a half minutes.
