PITTSBURGH - The Pittsburgh volleyball team dropped a 3-1 decision to 20th-ranked Notre Dame Oct. 8 at Fitzgerald Field House.
Sophomore setter Carrie Norris (Fostoria, Ohio/Hopewell-Loudon) had a career performance in the match, recording 80 assists to set a new Pittsburgh individual match record. The previous high was 76 achieved by Annemarie Mernagh in 1993 and Jenelle Lantagne in 1991.
Notre Dame jumped to an early lead with a 15-9 win in game one. The Panthers rebounded in game two. Pittsburgh built a 10-5 lead in the game and went on to take a 15-10 victory. The final two games were close contests, but the Fighting Irish prevailed, taking each game by a 16-14 score.
Senior Marcia Thiesen (Chatham, Ontario/John MacGregor) led the Panthers with a career-high 27 kills to go along with 11 digs. Fellow senior Stacy Renick (Eagan, Minn./Eagan) was not far behind with her 25 kills and 10 digs. Jennifer Nickels (Springfield, Ohio/Springfield North) hit .455 in the match and tied a career-high mark with 18 kills while also adding three aces.
Pittsburgh's record stands at 14-6 overall and 2-2 in Big East Conference play. The Panthers return to action this Wednesday when they host St. Francis (Pa.) in a 7 p.m. contest at Fitzgerald Field House.
