Volleyball Captures 3-2 Win Over Syracuse

PITTSBURGH - The Pittsburgh women's volleyball team grabbed its second conference win of the season with a hard-fought 3-2 win over Syracuse Oct. 7 at Fitzgerald Field House.
After bolting to a 1-0 advantage in the match with a 15-9 victory in game one, the Panthers squandered an 8-1 lead in game two and fell to the Orangewomen, 15-11. Syracuse came out on top in game three, 16-14, but Pittsburgh forced game five with its 15-10 win in the fourth game. The Panthers ultimately prevailed, winning 15-12 in the final game to take the match.
Pittsburgh senior Stacy Renick (Eagan, Minn./Eagan) continued her stellar play and led the Panthers with 28 kills. She also added three blocks and eight digs to her effort. Fellow seniors Marcia Thiesen (Chatham, Ontario/John MacGregor) and Jennifer Nickels (Springfield, Ohio/Springfield) also performed well. Thiesen notched 19 kills and 14 digs, while Nickels had 16 kills and a match-high eight blocks. Freshman Wendy Hatlestad (Roseville, Minn./Roseville Area) established a new career-high with 11 digs.
The Panthers' record improved to 14-5 overall and 2-1 in Big East conference play.
