Baseball Captures First Conference Victory

PITTSBURGH--The Pittsburgh Panther baseball team captured its first Big East Conference victory of the season with a 5-1 decision against Georgetown in an away doubleheader this past Sunday.
Junior pitcher John Schultz (Carrick, Pa./Carrick) recorded his first win, giving up six hits and no runs, walking only one batter, and striking out four. Bob Balazentis struck out three batters in the final inning and recorded his first save of the season.
At the plate, third baseman Charles Stafford (Edinboro, Pa./General McLane) went two-for-two, and designated hitter Bill Brown (Deer Lakes, Pa./Deer Lakes) went two-for-three with an RBI. Harry Ciavarella (Moscow, Pa./North Pocono) and Louis Melucci (Clarks Summit, Pa./Abington Heights) were also offensive forces for the Panthers. Ciavarella recorded a game-high two RBI's, including a double, and Melucci added a double and an RBI.
First baseman Steve Dickinson (Beaver Falls, Pa./Blackhawk) and catcher David Hoopes (Hershey, Pa./Lower Dauphin) were also impressive, recording nine and eight putouts, respectively.
The Hoyas' Jason Urban (4-2) pitched six and one third innings in the loss, giving up seven hits and four runs, walking eight batters, and striking out eight.
In the second game, Georgetown played with an unconquerable furry and defeated Pittsburgh, 15-1. In his third start of the season, senior Chris Gallick (Mt. Pleasant, Pa./Mt. Pleasant) (1-2) pitched three innings, giving up four hits and two runs, and recording two walks and strikeouts.
Kevin Foley (Burlington, Ontario, Canada/Notre Dame) hit a double in the top of the fourth to drive in Chris Delsignore (Johnstown, Pa./Westmont Hilltop) for the Panthers' sole run of the game. In the field, Jason Oliver (Coatsville, Pa./Coatsville Senior) recorded a team-high five putouts, playing at first base and right field.
For Georgetown, Randy Erwin (4-0) went the distance and pitched a complete game, giving up four hits and one run, while recording four walks and seven strikeouts.
The Panthers are 4-7 overall and 1-1 in the Big East. Pittsburgh will face crosstown-rival Duquesne Wednesday, March 25 at Duquesne Field. Game time is 2 p.m.
