Women's Track and Field Finishes 10th at NCAA Championships

BOISE, Idaho - For only the third time in school history and the second time in the past three years, the University of Pittsburgh women's track and field team claimed a top 10 finish at the NCAA Outdoor Championships, held June 2-5 at Boise State University.
Senior Trecia-Kaye Smith (Westmoreland, Jamaica/Mannings) and junior Chantee Earl (Hampton, Va./Hampton Christian) led the Panthers to a 10th-place (tied) finish, scoring 20 points along with Baylor University. Pittsburgh finished seventh in 1997 and ninth in 1994 at the NCAA Outdoors. It has four NCAA Indoor top 10 finishes (sixth in 1999, third in 1998, eighth in 1997 and sixth in 1995).
Smith, who ended her collegiate career with a total of seven NCAA championships and 15 All- America honors, accounted for 18 points, earning 10 in winning the long jump and eight in finishing runner-up in the triple jump. Earl, who has four All-America honors to her credit, added two points with a seventh-place finish in the 800 meters. Smith additionally competed in the heptathlon and finished 10th with 5,476 points.
Texas successfully defended it title with 62 points, followed by UCLA (60) and Southern California (58).
