PITTSBURGH - The Pittsburgh Panthers women's softball team captured its second and third victories of the season with wins over Fordham and Evansville this past weekend in the Georgia State Tournament.
The Panthers took a 4-0 decision over Fordham March 6 in the opening day of competition. Pittsburgh staked an early 3-0 lead in the second inning and held Fordham scoreless through the remainder of the game. The Panthers another run on Jackie Haar's (Naples, Fla./Lely) solo home run in the fourth to seal the victory.
Junior Laura LeViere (Pittsburgh, Pa./Northgate) worked all seven innings on the mound and pitched the first-ever complete game shutout in the history of the program. Haar finished the game with a 3-for-3 performance at the plate, including one home run and one RBI.
The game marked Pittsburgh's only matchup of the day due to inclement weather.
The Panthers returned to competition March 7, and won a 2-1 decision over Evansville in extra innings despite dropping 3-1 and 3-0 losses to host Georgia State and Virginia Tech earlier in the day. The win avenged Pittsburgh's 4-1 loss to the Aces last weekend in the Bama Bash.
Freshman Tiffany Barrett (Imperial, Pa./West Allegheny) gave Pittsburgh the lead off her first home run of the season in the bottom of the sixth, but Evansville rallied to knot the score at 1-1 in the top of the seventh. Sophomore Robin Johnston (Pittsburgh, Pa./Carrick) scored Pittsburgh's second run of the game off a wild pitch in the bottom of the eighth for the Panther victory.
The Panthers return to action when they face Southern Mississippi March 9 and Georgia March 10.
