Softball Sweeps Youngstown State in Season Finale

PITTSBURGH - The Pittsburgh Panthers women's softball team captured two victories over visiting Youngstown State today at Frick Field in the season finale for the Panthers. After posting a 2-0 win in game one, Pittsburgh continued its momentum for a 5-0 shutout in the second game.
Pittsburgh jumped to a 2-0 lead in game one in the bottom of the first when catcher Jackie Haar (Naples, Fla./Lely) knocked in her 15th home run of the season with a two-run shot over the right field fence. The Panthers held the Penguins scoreless for the remainder of the game for the shutout win.
Freshman pitcher Gina Bessolo (Lakewood, Calif./Lakewood) recorded the win for the Panthers, her eighth of the season. She pitched a complete game and gave up seven hits while striking out 10.
Pittsburgh got on the board early in game two with first baseman Katie Mitchell's (Wildwood, Mo./Lafayette) two-out two-run home run to left center in the bottom of the first inning. The Panthers continued their scoring in the following inning when shortstop Tiffany Barrett (Imperial, Pa./West Allegheny) crossed the plate on Haar's single. Pittsburgh added back-to-back insurance runs in fifth and sixth to seal its victory.
Junior Laura LeViere (Pittsburgh, Pa./Northgate) tallied her seventh win of the season on the mound. She pitched a complete game and gave up four hits and struck out five. Also performing well was Haar who went 2-for-3 at the plate with one RBI and a double, and Mitchell who was 2-for-4 with three RBI and a home run, her fifth of the season.
The Panthers finished their 1999 campaign with a 16-34-1 overall record and a 2-14 mark in the Big East Conference.
