PITTSBURGH - University of Pittsburgh head men's swimming coach Chuck Knoles has announced the additions of Stephen North and Brian Cutson to his 1999-2000 recruiting class.
North, a native of St. Charles, Ill., recently signed a national letter-of-intent to join Pittsburgh after leading St. Charles High School to the 1999 state championship title. He also claimed an individual title in the 100-yard butterfly. North will be counted upon to contribute in the 100- and 200-yard butterfly, and 50-yard freestyle events.
"I expect Stephen North to be a first-year contributor to our squad, just like our other Illinois stand-out, Steve Siler," said Knoles. "Stephen North's success in the butterflys and the sprints will help Pittsburgh dominate the Big East Conference in those events."
Cutson will join the Panthers after earning an academic scholarship to attend the University. A native of Oveido, Fla., he was a two-time state champion in the 200- and 500-yard freestyles while at Winter Park High School.
"Having Brian Cutson on the team, combined with our current sophomores, Will Eden and Eric vonDohlen, will give Pittsburgh a very powerful distance freestyle group to contend with," said Knoles.
North and Cutson are the second and third additions to the Panthers swimming and diving team. They join earlier signee Mike Grube (Drexel Hill, Pa./Upper Darby).
The Panthers won their third consecutive Big East Championship at the conclusion of the 1998-99 season. It was an unprecedented 14th team title and the sixth under Knoles.
