
Panthers Drop A 3-1 Decision To Georgetown

PITTSBURGH - Despite playing Georgetown closely throughout the four-game match, the Pittsburgh Panthers volleyball team fell, 3-1, to the Hoyas today at Fitzgerald Field House.
The Panthers battled Georgetown in the first game to a 20-18 Hoya decision. Pittsburgh rallied from a 8-0 deficit at the onset of the game to come within 9-4. Then, senior Peggy Meinhart (Netwon, Ill./Newton) helped bring the Panthers back in contention when she served her team through six straight points for a 10-9 lead over the Hoyas. After Georgetown put togther four points for a 13-10 advantage, the Hoyas and Panthers knotted the score six more times before Georgetown prevailed with the final margin. Game two provided an intense matchup as well, but the Hoyas took the win, 15-13. The Panthers forced a fourth game when they grabbed a 15-10 decision in game three. In the final game, the Panthers took an 8-2 advantage, but Georgetown came back for the 16-14 win.
Meinhart and freshman Tari Boutin (Burnsville, Minn./Burnsville) each posted double-double performances with their 14 kills apiece, while Meinhart added 19 digs and Boutin had 17. Junior Marcia Thiesen (Chatham, Ontario/John MacGregor) was solid defensively with 12 digs and three block assists. Junior Stacy Renick (Eagan, Minn./Eagan) added 13 kills to the Pittsburgh offensive effort to go along with nine digs and a team-high four blocks.
The Panthers' record stands at 8-8 overall and 1-4 in the Big East Conference.
Pittsburgh continues its league play tomorrow at Fitzgerald Field House when it takes on Villanova at 1 p.m.
