Volleyball Sweeps Akron, 3-0

PITTSBURGH, Pa. - The University of Pittsburgh volleyball team defeated Akron, 3-0, Sat., Sept. 19 at Fitzgerald Field House.
The Panthers opened the match with 15-9 victories in the first two games and went on to a 15-4 win in the final game of the day.
In the win, Pittsburgh registered a respectable .336 hitting percentage compared to the Zips .079. The Panthers also had six blocks, while limiting Akron to just one.
Juniors Peggy Meinhart (Newton, Ill./Newton) and Jenna Birkel (Lincoln, Neb./Lincoln Pius X) led the Panthers with 11 kills apiece. Senior Tara Haefner (Rochester, N.Y./Rush Henrietta) added a team-high 40 assists and nine digs. Junior Melissa Alpers (Milford, Mass./Milford) also had a team-high 10 digs and seven kills.
The win marks Pittsburgh's fifth of the season and improves its overall record to 5-5.
The Panthers' next action is Sept. 25-26 when they compete in the Harvard Classic. Pittsburgh will face Harvard and St. John's, Fri., Sept. 25, and Manhattan and Brown, Sat., Sept. 26.
