Volleyball Sweeps Rutgers

PITTSBURGH - The University of Pittsburgh volleyball team registered a 3-0 sweep over Big East-rival Rutgers Saturday at Fitzgerald Field House and snapped a five-game losing streak. The win improves the Panthers' record to 11-10 overall and 2-3 in the Big East.
The Panthers opened the match with seven straight points in game one to go on to a decisive 15-4 win. In game two, the Scarlet Knights took an early 8-2 lead, but the Panthers rallied and won the game, 15-10. Pittsburgh continued its momentum in game three to win, 15-10, and seal the match victory.
The Panthers registered a .273 hitting percentage in the match on 47 kills, 110 attempts and 17 errors, compared to Rutgers' .089 hitting percentage (33 kills, 23 errors, 112 attempts).
Junior Paula Zemrowski (Kalamazoo, Mich./Kalamazoo Central) recorded the only double-double of the match with a game-high 16 kills and 10 digs. Fellow junior Melissa Alpers (Milford, Mass./Milford) was second on the team with 10 kills, and added eight digs, two aces and one solo block. Also performing well was sophomore setter Lisa Riggle (Gillette, Wy./Campbell County) who had 38 assists, two kills, one ace and three digs.
Pittsburgh continues Big East conference play, Sunday, Oct. 25, when they host Seton Hall at 2 p.m. at Fitzgerald Field House.
