The exterior of Fitzgerald Field House flanked by a nearly empty parking lot and absolutely no street traffic. It is a gray, cloudless sky-- the plant life would suggest spring or summer. The building is a long, beige brick structure with a barrel vault roof clad in dark gray raised ridge material. Royal blue awnings shelter the many exterior doorways. It is a somber scene and as if the old building knows its days are numbered.

Opened in 1951, Fitzgerald Field House serves as the primary competition venue for Pitt's volleyball, gymnastics and wrestling programs. The building is also home to the department's primary strength and conditioning facility, training spaces for Wrestling and Track & Field, and coaches' offices for several programs. Originally built ot be the home of Pitt Men's Basketball it served that purpose well for over 50 years, with the team producing a winning home record of 414-175 (.703) over that time.
