Pair Garners Second Team Recognition
PITTSBURGH – Putting together solid seasons for the 2018 University of Pittsburgh baseball team, Frank Maldonado and Liam Sabino have garnered ABCA/Rawlings All-Region recognition, as announced Wednesday afternoon.
The duo lands on the second team, with Maldonado in the outfield and Sabino at third base.
Maldonado paced the Panther offense in his redshirt senior season, hitting at a .300 average with 11 doubles, two triples and five homers. He tallied 41 RBI and recorded a .450 slugging percentage and a .384 on base mark. He led the team with 21 multi-hit games and recorded 11 multi-RBI performances.
Flawless defensively as well, Maldonado was errorless on the year, adding two outfield assists and 111 putouts. He wrapped up his career with just two errors between his time in centerfield and right field, owning a .995 career fielding mark.
Sabino was a power threat for the Panthers as a redshirt junior, taking control of the lineup after missing the 2017 season due to NCAA transfer rules. He hit at a .286 clip with a team-leading 17 doubles and 16 home runs to rank fifth in the ACC. He totaled 18 multi-hit games and a team-best 12 multi-RBI. He totaled a team-high 44 RBI with a .595 slugging percentage, which ranked fifth in the ACC and 85th in the country.
The infielder was drafted in 35th round with the 1,053rd pick of the St. Louis Cardinals.
The All-Region selections are the first for a Panther hitter since 2016 when Charles Leblanc was named to the ABCA/Rawlings and NCBWA All-Region teams.
