Sabino Homers in Friday Evening Defeat
NOTRE DAME, Ind. – The University of Pittsburgh baseball team fell in a tough outing in the opening game of a three-game ACC series Friday evening at Frank Eck Stadium in Notre Dame, Ind., as Pitt dropped a 7-4 decision to the Fighting Irish.
Pitt (25-18, 10-12 ACC) would jump out to a 4-0 run led through the opening three frames, scoring two in both the first and third innings. A leadoff walk to Connor Perry would allow an RBI double to score the first of the game off the bat of David Yanni, before a single to right from Liam Sabino would plate Yanni and give Pitt a 2-0 advantage.
The Panthers would increase their lead to four in the third as Sabino launched his team-leading 12th homer of the season past the scoreboard in left center to give the Panthers a 4-0 lead.
Notre Dame (22-24, 11-14 ACC), however, would storm back in the following three innings, scoring two in both the fourth and fifth to tie it up before a solo homer in the sixth would give the Fighting Irish their first lead of the game. The home team would add a pair of insurance runs in the eighth, taking a 7-4 advantage it would not surrender.
Pitt added some excitement in the ninth, loading the bases with two outs, forcing a pair of pitching changes for the Fighting Irish. The Panthers, however, were unable to score as the Fighting Irish held on for the victory.
Dan Hammer (2-3) earned the loss, despite a strong performance on the mound. The sophomore set a career high with nine strikeouts in his 6.0 innings, allowing four runs off eight hits and just one walk. Fellow sophomore RJ Freure threw 2.0 innings of relief, surrendering two runs off two hits and two walks, fanning five.
Offensively, Sabino led the charge, going 2-4 with one run scored and two RBI. Yanni was a significant contributor, finishing the evening 2-4 with two runs and an RBI.
The Panthers and Fighting Irish will take to the field for game two tomorrow with first pitch set for 2 p.m. Redshirt senior ace Matt Pidich is set to take the mound for the Panthers.
