Pitt Gears up for ACC Tournament Next Week
PITTSBURGH – The University of Pittsburgh baseball team dropped the regular season finale with No. 7 Clemson Saturday afternoon in a 5-0 defeat at the hands of the Tigers at Charles L. Cost Field.
"We are obviously not pleased with the outcome," said head coach Joe Jordano. "There were several opportunities in that ballgame to, not only take the lead, but also to extend the lead and we didn't take advantage of those. We just have to continue to play hard, like we have been. I feel very good with the guys we have to cash some of those opportunities in. Chris [Gomez] gave us a good start today and we are going to be rested and ready to go for Tuesday."
Despite Pitt (27-25, 11-19 ACC) getting the bats going early, Clemson (43-13, 22-8 ACC) would be the first on the board, tallying two in the third inning to take the lead.
After two scoreless innings, the Tigers hit a solo homer to center field to increase their lead to 3-0.
Rain delayed the game for a little more than an hour during the sixth inning, but the two teams were able to return to play.
The Tigers tacked on two more in the seventh, taking a 5-0 advantage over the Panthers, a lead they would hold for the rest of the game.
Chris Gomez (2-1) earned the tough loss, giving up two runs and three hits, while striking out four across 4.2 innings. RJ Freure pitched an inning of relief, giving up just one hit and one run and striking out three. Chase Smith, Yaya Chentouf and senior TJ Pagan also saw time out of the bullpen, while Kevin Henriksen pitched the ninth to finish up the game for the Panthers.
Offensively, Frank Maldonado went 3-4 including two triples, while Liam Sabino, Caleb Parry, Chris Cappas and Cole MacLaren all recorded a hit.
The Panthers will return to action next week when they travel to Durham, N.C., for the 2018 ACC Championship. Pool play will begin Tuesday, May 22 and conclude Friday, May 25. The winners of the pools will face off in the semifinals on Saturday, May 26, with the championship game being held on Sunday.
Notes: With his two triples today, Frank Maldonado now has 16 career three-baggers, moving him into sole possession of second place in Panthers history for career triples … Pitt will head to the ACC Championship for the first time in program history next week as matchups and game times will be announced Sunday morning.
