Washington Homers as Pitt Drops Series Opener
PITTSBURGH – The University of Pittsburgh baseball team fell to ACC rival Louisville, 6-3, in the opener of a three-game series at Charles L. Cost Field Friday night.
"It was a solid baseball game," said head coach Joe Jordano. "Obviously, we're disappointed we came up on the short end, but they're a quality team with a great tradition. It turned out to be one swing of the bat was the difference in the game. You've got to give credit to Louisville, they did a very good job at the plate, made all the plays and made some big pitches. We just have to come back hard tomorrow, refocus, and try to even the series."
Louisville (35-15, 13-12 ACC) took an early lead, scoring a run in the first two innings to go up 2-0.
Pitt (27-20, 11-14 ACC) responded in the bottom of the second, scoring three to take a one-run lead. Ron Washington Jr. got the offense going, smashing his fourth home run of the season to put the Panthers on the board. After Caleb Parry walked and advanced to second on a passed ball, Chris Cappas grounded out and advanced Parry to third. Cole MacLaren doubled down the left field line to bring home Parry, and Connor Perry tripled to left field to score MacLaren.
The Cardinals would add three in the fifth to take a 5-3 lead, before adding an insurance run in the seventh to make it 6-3, a lead they wouldn't relinquish.
Dan Hammer (2-4) earned the loss, giving up nine hits and four runs while striking out four across 4.1 innings. TJ Pagan was solid in relief, pitching 4.2 innings, allowing three hits and two runs while striking out one. Neither pitcher gave up a walk in the game.
Offensively, Liam Sabino and MacLaren each went 1-2, with MacLaren tallying an RBI. Perry finished the night 1-3 with an RBI while Washington Jr. went 1-4 with an RBI.
The Panthers and Cardinals will return to action tomorrow for game two with first pitch set for 11 a.m. Redshirt senior ace Matt Pidich is set to take the mound for the Panthers.
