Pitt Tallies 14 Hits in Series Opening Win
"I thought we did a good job at the plate," said head coach Joe Jordano. "We made a couple of adjustments mid-innings and obviously [David] Yanni got us off to a good start. We made some good swings. I told the guys postgame that that was something that I look for, regardless of the circumstances, is taking good swings. If you take good swings, good things are going to happen. That has been something we have been working on over the past couple of weeks and hopefully we repeat it tomorrow. We pitched well and played well defensively and did what we had to do to win the game. We have to come back tomorrow, repeat it and try and build some momentum moving forward."
Pitt (24-17, 10-11 ACC) jumped out to an early lead in the first when David Yanni hit a solo homer to center, his fourth of the season. The Panthers would break open the game in the fourth inning, scoring six runs to take a 7-0 lead. Ron Washington Jr. smacked a double to open the frame. A walk from Nick Banman and a single from Chris Cappas would load the bases for catcher Cole MacLaren who would hit a double of his own to bring home all three runners, putting Pitt up by four. After a hit by pitch put Yanni on, Liam Sabino would hit his team-leading 10th home run to give the Panthers a seven-run lead.
Maryland Eastern Shore (9-36, 5-16 MEAC) would add one off a solo home run in the sixth, but the Panthers would answer right back with three of their own to go up 10-1. Frank Maldonado doubled to right field and Yanni walked to put two on base for Sabino, who singled through the left side to bring home Maldonado. Caleb Parry would draw a walk in the next at bat, before Washington Jr. hit his second double of the night to score Yanni and Parry and increase the lead to nine.
The Hawks would add another in the seventh, but the Panthers again answered with two runs in the home half of the frame. Cappas opened the inning with his second double of the year, and would cross the plate after Connor Perry tripled. Perry would come home on a sacrifice fly from Maldonado to close out the inning with Pitt on top 12-2.
Pitt added three more in the bottom of the eighth, continuing to add to their commanding lead. After Parry was hit by a pitch, Bryce O'Farrell singled and Danny Alvarez was hit by a pitch to load the bases for the second time on the night. A sacrifice fly from Cappas would score Perry, and Nico Samarkos would crush a triple, the first hit of his career, to cross both O'Farrell and Alvarez. The Hawks would add one in the top of the ninth but would succumb to the Panthers' 15-3 victory.
Derek West (2-4) earned the win after pitching four scoreless innings, giving up just two hits while walking three and striking out five. Kevin Henriksen was solid in relief, giving up one earned run on three hits and striking out six across four innings of work, setting a new career hit for punch outs. Freshman Chase Smith closed out the game with one inning of work, allowing a run off one hit.
The offense was dominant throughout the game, with 11 players recording a hit and three Panthers putting together a mulita-hit performance. Sabino paced the group, going 2-5 with four RBI and a run scored, while Washington Jr. wrapped up the night 2-4 with two RBI and a run scored. Cappas also put together a solid outing, going 2-3 with an RBI and a pair of runs.
The Panthers and Hawks return to action tomorrow at 12 p.m. for the series finale at Charles L. Cost Field. Sophomore Chris Gomez is expected to take the mound for the Panthers.
Notes: Pitt's 15 runs are tied for third most scored this season – Saint Peter's (21), Toledo (17), Virginia Tech game three (15) … Pitt's 11 hits are tied for sixth most this season … the RBI triple from Samarkos was his first collegiate hit in just his second at bat … Kevin Henriksen set a new career high in strikeouts with six … Pitt's five doubles tie its season high.
