Panthers Close Historic 2018 Season at Columbus Regional

Head Coach Samantha Snider Concludes First Season at the Helm.
COLUMBUS, Ohio – Under first-year head coach Samantha Snider, the University of Pittsburgh gymnastics team concluded the 2018 season at the NCAA Regional Championship in Columbus, Ohio, Saturday, April 7 at St. John Arena.
The Panthers historic season came to an end on Ohio State's campus as Pitt competed in the Regional Championship meet for the first time since 2013 under Snider and staff. The Panthers earned a fifth place finish behind a score of 195.125.
Pitt saw its highest event score of the evening come in the opening rotation on bars, as the Panthers posted the seventh-best score in program history, a 49.125. The 2018 bars squad now owns six of the top 10 program scores, including the event record (49.275), which they have notched twice this season. As the meet continued, Pitt scored a 48.075 on beam, a 48.975 on floor and rounded out the Championship with a 48.950 on vault.
Individually, five Panthers earned top 10 finishes in sophomores Deven Herbine and Lucy Jones, seniors Taylor Laymon and Catie Conrad and freshman Haley Brechwald. Brechwald tied for eighth place on floor after posting a 9.875, while Herbine also tied for eighth but on vault with a 9.850. Tying for ninth on bars was both Jones and Laymon, with each earning a 9.850. In the all-around, Conrad finished ninth overall with a 39.075.

BARS
Pitt got off to a phenomenal start in the meet, hitting a 49.125 on bars, good for the seventh-best score in program history. The bars squad, who now owns six of the top 10 program scores, counted five marks that were a 9.800 or above. Laymon and Jones led the squad, as both earned a career-high tying 9.850. Sophomore Megan Tripp posted a 9.825 to follow, while junior Lucy Brett and Conrad each finished with a 9.800.
BEAM
The Panthers continued the evening on beam, where they tallied a 48.075, led by Conrad. Conrad posted a 9.750 in the event and was followed by Jones with a 9.725. Tripp and Brechwald rounded out the top scores, with each scoring a 9.700.
FLOOR
After a bye, Pitt returned to competition on floor, where the team earned a 48.975. Brechwald posted the highest individual score of the event for the Panthers, earning a 9.875. Juniors Kensleigh Owens and Charli Spivey tied for the second-best score for Pitt, with each earning a 9.800. The final three competitors in sophomore Sophie Bochenek, junior Alecia Petrikis and Conrad, all scored a 9.750.
VAULT
Pitt concluded the Championship on vault with a 48.950. Herbine led the way with a 9.850, while Owens followed with a 9.800. Brechwald and Conrad tied for the third-highest score on the squad with a 9.775, while Petrikis and Bochenek both scored a 9.750.
ALL-AROUND
Conrad and Brechwald were the Panthers two all-around competitors at the Columbus Regional. Conrad finished with the meet with a 39.075, while Brechwald concluded her freshman campaign with a 38.625.
