Panthers Host Third Annual Negro League Celebration
PITTSBURGH – The University of Pittsburgh baseball team dropped the weekend finale home against LIU Brooklyn, 5-1 Sunday afternoon at Charles L. Cost Field. Pitt captured the series win over the Blackbirds with a doubleheader sweep Saturday.
The Panthers hosted their third annual Negro League Celebration, joining forces with the Josh Gibson Foundation. Pitt honored Dr. John Wilds as the recipient of the Community Champion Award. Pitt sported throwback Homestead Grays uniforms as LIU Brooklyn donned New York Black Yankees caps.
"I was very disappointed in our offense again today," said head coach Joe Jordano. "It is very frustrating when you know that your ability is way beyond our execution at this point and that is the difference. I was very impressed with LIU Brooklyn, they are a very solid fundamental team. They did a lot of good things and got some big hits when they needed them. That was the difference in the game. We had our opportunities, we left nine runner on, that is 32 baserunners in three games that we left out there. We didn't cash in. At the end of the day, that's baseball. I thought that their lefty [Cory Hart] did a really good job commanding his pitches and keeping us off balance. They made all the plays and that was the difference in the game."
The visitors scored in the fifth, taking a 3-0 advantage after a two-run single and a fielder's choice gave the Blackbirds a lead they wouldn't surrender. They would add single runs in the sixth and ninth to take a 5-0 lead.
The Panthers broke up the shutout in the bottom of the ninth as Cole MacLaren sent a two-out RBI single into center to score Chris Cappas, but that would be all for the Panthers as they fell 5-1.
Starter Blair Calvo (1-4) earned the loss, going 4.1 innings, allowing three earned runs off six hits and striking out five. Chase Smith entered the game and threw 1.0 inning, walking two and giving up an unearned run. RJ Freure also saw time in relief, pitching 1.2 innings, striking out five and allowing just one hit. Yaya Chentouf would enter in the seventh, going 2.0 innings allowing an unearned run and one hit, striking out one.
Offensively, both Frank Maldonado and Caleb Parry tallied two-hit outings, both going 2-4 on the afternoon. Liam Sabino, David Yanni and Cappas would also collect a hit.
Pitt returns to action Tuesday for a two game mid-week series against Maryland Eastern Shore as the series is set to get underway at 6 p.m. The two teams will wrap up the mid-week slate Wednesday at noon.
