Pitt Secures Series from Blackbirds in Non-Conference Weekend
PITTSBURGH – The University of Pittsburgh baseball team returned to the diamond Saturday evening, securing a doubleheader sweep of LIU Brooklyn in non-conference action at Charles L. Cost Field.
The Panthers (23-16, 10-11 ACC) walked off game one, 2-1, after a single off the bat of David Yanni, moving on to take game two, 1-0, to assure the series win.
"A really great job from our pitching staff today," said head coach Joe Jordano. "Matt [Pidich] in the first game carried a no-hitter to the ninth with two outs. He earned the last batter that got the double down the line that tied the ballgame up. Matt was outstanding, Yaya [Chentouf] came in, gave us an opportunity, then we scored on the walk-off.
"The second ballgame, once again I thought [Dan] Hammer did a great job for us. RJ [Freure] came in and was equally as impressive. We obviously did not do a very good job offensively in either ballgame and that is something we have to clean up."
Game One
Redshirt senior starter Matt Pidich threw a stellar game, taking a no-hitter into the final batter of the ninth inning, before an RBI double would break up the no-no bid and tie the contest.
Pidich went 8.2 innings, allowing the lone run off just one hit, walking four and striking out a career-high 10 batters.
The Panthers scored first as Frank Maldonado doubled to center in the sixth, scoring David Yanni to give the Panthers a 1-0 lead.
LIU Brooklyn would tie it up in the ninth as Andrew Turner doubled down the left field line, to tie it up at 1-1.
Knotted up at 1-1 in the bottom of the ninth, Yanni came up to the plate with runners on first and second and hit a shot into right field, allowing Cole MacLaren to score the winning run as the Panthers claimed a 2-1 victory.
Pidich's start led the way for the team as Yaya Chentouf (5-2) earned the victory. The junior closer threw a third of an inning, using just one pitch to silence the Blackbirds' threat.
Offensively, both Yanni (2-4) and Maldonado (2-4) put together two-hit performances, as seven Panther batters tallied a hit.
Game Two
Pitching was again dominant in game two as sophomore Dan Hammer put together his third straight solid performance. The righty went 7.1 innings, holding the Blackbirds off the scoresheet, allowing just three hits and two walks, striking out seven.
The lone run was scored in the eighth as Chris Cappas would draw a bases-loaded walk to bring home Nico Popa as the Panthers took advantage of a single and three straight walks to grab the advantage.
Hammer would earn a no decision in the contest as sophomore RJ Freure (4-1) collected the win, going 1.2 innings, surrendering two hits and a walk, striking out four.
Offensively, Connor Perry put together a two-hit performance as Liam Sabino, Ron Washington Jr. and Nick Banman also collected hits.
The Panthers and Blackbirds conclude the series tomorrow with a 12 p.m. first pitch at Charles L. Cost Field. Both teams will take part in Pitt's third annual Negro League Celebration, paying tribute to the Homestead Grays and New York Black Yankees. Redshirt junior Blair Calvo is set to get the start on the mound for the Panthers.
