MacLaren’s Three RBI Lift Pitt to First Series Win over Miami in Program History
CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The University of Pittsburgh baseball team clinched the series over ACC Coastal Division rival Miami Saturday afternoon, taking game one of a doubleheader 3-0 at Alex Rodriguez Park.
The victory sealed Pitt's (21-15, 10-10 ACC) fourth straight ACC series win, marking the most ACC series victories the Panthers have had since joining the league in 2014. The win also marked the first time in program history that the Panthers took a series from Miami.
It was another pitchers' duel through the first six frames, as Pitt starter Matt Pidich and Miami starter Evan McKendry would go back-and-forth, limiting both sides to a total of just four hits in the opening six innings.
Pitt loaded the bases in the seventh, after a walk to Nick Banman, single by Bryce O'Farrell and walk to Nico Popa. Miami would call upon reliever Frankie Bartow who let up a single into left center off the bat of Cole MacLaren, plating both Banman and O'Farrell to give Pitt a 2-0 advantage.
Pidich would get a pair of quick outs via strikeout in the bottom of the frame, surrendering a walk and single to put a pair. Pitt would call on reliever RJ Freure who would escape the inning unscathed as the Panthers remained on top through seven.
The eighth saw a bit of flair as Ron Washington Jr. would be struck on the back by a pitch from Bartow, prompting an ejection from the crew chief. The bottom half again saw Miami get a pair on but Freure would stifle the threat as a ground ball to David Yanni ensured Pitt would own a two-run lead heading into the final frame.
MacLaren recorded another RBI in the ninth, roping a two-out single into the right field corner to plate Connor Perry, who had reached on an infield single, to extend Pitt's lead to 3-0.
Freure would return to the mound for the ninth, earning his first save of the season as Pitt clinched the series over the Hurricanes.
Pidich (5-1) earned the victory, going 6.2 innings, allowing just four hits and four walks, whiffing seven. Freure would enter and throw 2.1 innings in the save, giving up three hits and striking out one.
Game two of the doubleheader is slated for 7 p.m. as the series will conclude with Blair Calvo on the mound for the Panthers.
