Panthers Capture First Win in Miami in Program History
CORAL GABLES, Fla. – A monster home run over the scoreboard off the bat of freshman Ron Washington Jr. lifted the University of Pittsburgh baseball team to a 2-1 victory over Miami in the series opener Friday evening at Alex Rodriguez Park in Coral Gables, Fla.
The victory is the first road win for the Panthers in the series history of the ACC Coastal Division rivals and is the third straight league win for Pitt as the Panthers look for their fourth straight ACC series win.
With one out in a tie game in the top of the ninth, Washington Jr. launched a no doubter over the scoreboard in left field to give the Panthers an advantage they would not surrender.
Miami struck first in the opening frame as a hit by pitch, stolen base and fly out put a runner on third. A wild pitch would let the leadoff man score as the home team went up 1-0.
Pitt would respond in the third, tying the game off an RBI triple by David Yanni that plated Cole MacLaren who had reached on a one-out single into center.
After the hiccup in the first inning, starter Dan Hammer settled in, retiring 18 of the 24 men he faced through the next six innings.
Washington Jr.'s homer in the ninth would break up the tie as closer Yaya Chentouf would enter and use just six pitches to stifle the Miami offense, earning his seventh save of the season.
Hammer was spectacular in his second straight start, going 7.0 innings, allowing one run off just three hits, walking two and striking out three. Freshman Chase Smith (1-1) threw one inning of scoreless work, holding the Hurricanes off the base paths, whiffing one as he earned his first collegiate win.
Pitt out-hit the Hurricanes 6-3 in the pitching duel, as Washington Jr. went 3-4 with an RBI and a run scored. Yanni, Bryce O'Farrell and MacLaren all tallied hits as well.
The Panthers and Hurricanes return to the diamond tomorrow for the doubleheader finale, with first pitch slated for 2 p.m. and game two set for 7 p.m.
