Hammer Stellar in First ACC Start since March 23
PITTSBURGH – The University of Pittsburgh baseball team fell to ACC Coastal Division rival Georgia Tech Friday night at Charles L. Cost Field, dropping game one by a score of 7-3.
"I was really happy for Dan [Hammer], but obviously we struggled a little bit late and couldn't hang on to the lead," said head coach Joe Jordano. "But overall, he pitched well and Yaya [Chentouf] takes a tough outing today, but that's a kid that has been so great for us, and that's just baseball. We'll just come back tomorrow and we will do it again. It was a good baseball game. It could've went either way and one swing of the bat was the difference."
Nick Banman put Pitt (17-14, 6-10 ACC) on the board first, bringing home Frank Maldonado on a single to right field in the opening inning to give the Panthers a 1-0 advantage. In the third, the Panthers extended their lead as Ron Washington Jr. crushed his second homer of the season, a monster 440-foot shot into right center, to put the Panthers up 2-0.
Georgia Tech (21-14, 9-7 ACC) would add one in the fifth, but the Panthers would answer right back when Liam Sabino hit his team-best ninth homer of the season to put Pitt up by two once more.
The Yellow Jackets tied it up in the eighth, and would take the lead on a grand slam in the ninth. Pitt was unable to surmount the deficit, falling to Georgia Tech 7-3.
Yaya Chentouf (4-2) earned the loss. Dan Hammer was solid in his 10th appearance and first start since March 23 against Duke, pitching a season-high 7.0 innings, giving up six hits and just two walks, fanning six.
The Panthers will look to even up the series with the Yellow Jackets Saturday at 3 p.m. Matt Pidich is expected to get the start on the mound for the Panthers. The finale, which was originally slated for 1 p.m. has been moved back to 11 a.m.
