Pitchers Put Together Solid Performance in Loss
PITTSBURGH – The University of Pittsburgh baseball team fell in a mid-week contest with Kent State Tuesday evening, dropping a 4-1 decision to the Golden Flashes at Charles L. Cost Field.
"It was a disappointing loss," said head coach Joe Jordano. "I thought we did some good things on the mound. It was great to see Derek [West] out there and get some good innings in. A couple other freshmen, Chase [Smith] and Chris [Cappas], came in and did a good job for us. We just needed to swing the bats a little better and take advantage of some offensive opportunities, but there are some things that we have to tighten up a little bit moving forward."
The Golden Flashes had their bats going early, taking a 3-0 advantage in the opening frame after an RBI triple and a two-run homer.
The Panthers would cut the lead to 3-1 in the bottom of the 6th as Nick Banman grounded out, scoring Liam Sabino, who reached on his 10th double of the season. The Golden Flashes would tack on another run in the seventh, taking a 4-1 advantage.
Redshirt sophomore Derek West (1-3) earned the loss, but put together a solid performance after a rocky first inning. West tossed a career-best 6.1 innings, allowing four runs off five hits and two walks, whiffing a career-high seven. Freshman Chase Smith threw one inning without surrendering a hit, walking one and fanning one. Fellow freshman Chris Cappas made his first pitching appearance in the top of the 8th, striking out the only two batters he faced. Senior TJ Pagan closed out the game, allowing one hit and striking out two.
"Our pitching was solid, our defense was solid, but all three phases of the game have to be on target for us to be successful," said Jordano. "We have to continue to work hard and move the baseball a little bit better and do a better job at the plate."
The Panthers return to action tomorrow, traveling to West Virginia to face the Mountaineers in the Backyard Brawl at 6 p.m. in a makeup game from a March 27 rain out.
