Sabino Homers, Maldonado Continues Offensive Tear in Sunday Win
PITTSBURGH – The University of Pittsburgh baseball team defeated Virginia 4-1 on Sunday afternoon at Charles L. Cost Field to capture its first ACC series win of the season, and first ever series win over the Cavaliers.
"I believe in these guys and I believe in what we're doing. We do things the right way and we have a very clear vision of what we want to do," said head coach Joe Jordano. "We have to stick to it and keep working hard. We're a competitive team. We've talked about over the past four or five years, I think we've had 21 or 22 one-run losses in the conference. But, we focus on today, where our feet are and moving forward. I told the guys after the game that it was a great win, a great series win, and let's charge into next week, all in. We're going to be very competitive in our mid-weeks and move forward to next weekend."
Liam Sabino got things started for the Panthers in his first at bat, smacking a solo homer in the first inning for his team-leading seventh long ball of the season, giving Pitt (14-10, 4-8 ACC) an early 1-0 lead. The Panthers would increase their lead to three in the third, after Frank Maldonado singled through the left side to score Nico Popa and Alex Amos, bringing Maldonado's RBI count to eight for the series.
The Panthers would tack on another run in the seventh, when Maldonado singled to bring home Amos, who had advanced to third on a throwing error after a passed ball following his leadoff single.
Virginia (15-13, 4-8 ACC) would be able to break up the shutout in the eighth, scoring a lone run, but that would be the extent of the offense for the Cavaliers.
The trio of Blair Calvo (1-1), Kevin Henriksen and Yaya Chentouf held the Cavaliers to just three hits while only giving up one run. Calvo, who earned his first win of his career, pitched five innings, giving up two hits while walking two and striking out one. Chentouf was solid in relief again, not allowing a hit while striking out two en route to his fifth save of the year.
Offensively, Maldonado once again dominated against the Cavaliers, going 2-3 with two hits and three RBI. He tallied nine RBI in the series, going 5-9 with a .889 slugging percentage and .667 on base mark in three games. Amos also went 2-3, while Popa strung together another two-hit performance.
The Panthers are back in action Tuesday at 6 p.m., traveling to Youngstown State to face the Penguins in the first game of a home-and-home series.
