Pitt Off to Best Start Since 2002
Pitt (10-2) used 17 hits to push 21 runs across the plate, including a pair of homers by Liam Sabino, as the Panthers have now won five straight.
"We swung the bats very well today and capitalized on our situational opportunities," said head coach Joe Jordano. "We also executed our plan on the mound and got the work in for six pitchers that we needed heading into ACC play. Liam [Sabino] did a great job at the plate with two home runs, followed by David [Yanni] with three hits and it was great to get Caleb [Parry] back in the lineup for the first time since opening weekend. I was also pleased with two of our freshmen, Ron [Washington Jr.] and Chris [Cappas] each getting two hits. Defensively, we played well again.
"Coach Ramirez just took over the program at Saint Peter's and will get it going there. They played hard and I respect that very much. We did what we were supposed to do today and I look forward to continuing our goal of improving our team game and game day approach each day. It's a long season."
Sabino's first homer came in the opening inning as he lifted a two run shot over the wall in left to give Pitt the early lead. The Panthers would score three more in the third, jumping out to a 5-0 lead. A fielder's choice off the bat of Ron Washington Jr. and a two-run double by Chris Cappas scored the Pitt runs in the third frame.
The offense exploded in the fourth, scoring 11 runs off seven hits for a double-digit lead. A pair of doubles by Caleb Parry in his first game since opening weekend, as well as an RBI double for David Yanni plated a majority of the runs in the inning, as Parry tallied four RBI in the inning, including a bases clearing two bagger.
Saint Peter's would score its lone run in the fifth before Pitt tallied two more in the sixth and seventh innings, as well as one in the eighth. Sabino's second bomb of the game came in the seventh as he sent a straight shot off the batter's eye in center.
With the victory, Pitt improves to 10-2, winners of five straight. Chris Gomez earned the win, tossing 3.0 innings of scoreless work, not allowing a hit or walk, fanning two in his first start of the season. Six pitchers saw work as Kevin Henriksen, William Kirwan, Lucas Maldonado, TJ Pagan and RJ Freure each threw at least one inning.
Offensively, Sabino went 2-3 with four RBI and four runs scored, including the pair of homers, to bring his season total to five. Yanni put together a 3-3 performance, adding two RBI and three runs. Washington Jr. finished 3-5 with three RBI and a run scored, while Cappas went 2-4 with four RBI and two runs scored.
The Panthers will get its ever-challenging ACC slate underway this weekend, traveling to Virginia Tech for a three-game series with the Hokies in Blacksburg, Va. Action gets underway Friday at 4 p.m. with both Saturday and Sunday scheduled for 1 p.m. starts. Those games will be broadcast live on the ACC Network via WatchESPN and the WatchESPN app.
