Panthers Drop 13-2 Decision in Chapel Hill
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The University of Pittsburgh baseball team dropped the series finale with North Carolina Sunday afternoon at Boshamer Stadium in Chapel Hill, N.C., succumbing to a 13-2 defeat at the hands of the Tar Heels.
"That was one of the most disappointing weekends we have had," said head coach Joe Jordano. "We were beat in every aspect of the game. We didn't pitch well. We didn't hit. We didn't do anything to stop Carolina. That's a very good team, as usual, but we were simply not good enough. We will have to figure it out quick. I will say it will be a great feeling to finally be home, 19 games in a row on the road is a challenge."
After North Carolina jumped out to a 7-0 lead in the fourth, Nick Banman tallied Pitt's (11-7, 1-5 ACC) lone RBI on the game, as a fielder's choice allowed Liam Sabino to score from third and a throwing error by the North Carolina second baseman pushed David Yanni across.
The Tar Heels scored at least one run in the first five innings, adding another in the seventh to acquire a lead they wouldn't surrender.
Blair Calvo (0-1) earned the loss, throwing 1.0 inning, allowing five runs off four hits and two walks. Chris Gomez, Dan Hammer, Chase Smith, Peyton Reesman, RJ Freure and Yaya Chentouf all saw work out of the pen.
Sabino paced the Pitt offense, going 2-2 with a run scored and a walk. Yanni was 1-2 with a run scored and two walks, while Ron Washington Jr. and Frank Maldonado also collected a hit.
The Panthers return to action on Wednesday, traveling to State College, Pa., for a mid-week battle with rival Penn State at 6:30 p.m.
Notes: Pitt is now 5-10-0 all-time against the Tar Heels … David Yanni extended his reached-base streak to 28 games dating back to the 2017 (injured) and 2016 seasons to pace the team.
