Pitt Drops Game Two of Weekend Series
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The University of Pittsburgh baseball team dropped game two of the weekend series with the Tar Heels of North Carolina Saturday afternoon, falling 4-0 at Boshamer Stadium in Chapel Hill, N.C.
"We played much better today and had some great chances to get on the board early and we did not convert," said head coach Joe Jordano. "I am confident that if we continue to get these chances we will cash in. We took some solid at bats and squared up some balls, we just didn't find any green. Matt [Pidich] gave us a great start and Chase [Smith] was very good in relief. It was a solid baseball game. Carolina got the timely hits and we did not. We have to keep putting ourselves in a position to score and keep battling at the plate. We just have to continue to play hard and execute our game plan. Back at it tomrorow."
Pitt (11-6, 1-4 ACC) tallied four hits on the afternoon, as David Yanni collected a pair, with Liam Sabino and Ron Washington Jr. also factoring in.
Redshirt senior Matt Pidich (2-1) earned the loss, tossing 5.2 innings, allowing four runs off nine hits and one walk, fanning four. Freshman Chase Smith threw a solid 2.1 innings of relief, letting up just one hit and one walk, recording a pair of strikeouts.
North Carolina would score in the opening frame, before tallying another urn in the fifth and a pair in the sixth to secure the win.
The Panthers and Tar Heels will return to action tomorrow in the series finale, set for 1 p.m. Redshirt junior Blair Calvo is set to get the start on the bump for Pitt.
Notes: Pitt is now 5-9-0 all-time against the Tar Heels … David Yanni extended his reached-base streak to 27 games dating back to the 2017 (injured) and 2016 seasons to pace the team.
