Pitt Falls to Tar Heels 15-3 in Game One
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The University of Pittsburgh baseball team fell in the opening contest of a three-game weekend at North Carolina, dropping a 15-3 decision to the Tar Heels at Boshamer Stadium in Chapel Hill, N.C.
The Panthers took the early lead off a sacrifice fly by David Yanni in the opening frame that allowed Alex Amos to score on a diving play at the plate, giving Pitt a 1-0 advantage.
"A poor performance tonight. We all expected much more," said head coach Joe Jordano. "We didn't pitch well at all – allowed nine walks and 14 hits – and that isn't going to do it. We have to flush it and come back out tomorrow and be much better."
North Carolina would score two in the second and nine in the third to jump out to an 11-1 lead.
Pitt, however, began to chip away at the lead in the fifth. Frank Maldonado would record his second hit in as many at bats, blooping a single into center, making way for the first career home run for freshman Ron Washington Jr., cutting the Tar Heels' lead to 11-3.
Derek West (1-2) earns the loss, tossing 2.0 innings, allowing four runs off three hits and four hits. Offensively, the two-run bomb by Washington Jr. led the way. Maldonado finished the day 3-4 with a run scored.
The Panthers and Tar Heels continue the series tomorrow at 4 p.m. at Boshamer Field as Matt Pidich is set to get the start for Pitt on the bump.
Notes: Pitt is now 5-8-0 all-time against the Tar Heels … it was the first time the Panthers surrendered 15 or more runs in a 17-4 defeat at the hands of then 11th-ranked Florida State in Pittsburgh on March 18, 2016 … David Yanni extended his reached-base streak to 22 games dating back to the 2017 season to pace the team … Connor Perry, Yanni and Cole MacLaren all saw multi-game hit streaks come to an end.
