Panthers Drop 1-0 Decision to Former Big East Foe
SPARTANBURG, S.C. – An error late in the outing allowed the only run of the contest to come across as the University of Pittsburgh baseball team fell to Seton Hall 1-0 in the finale of the Wofford-USC Upstate Tournament Saturday night.
A throwing error in the seventh inning allowed an unearned run to come across for the Pirates as that would be the lone run of the game. Pitt (5-2) snaps a four-game win streak with the loss and closes out the Wofford-USC Upstate Tournament with a mark of 2-1.
"That was a tough loss," said head coach Joe Jordano. "We pitched very well. Blair [Calvo] gave us a solid outing as he continues to increase his pitch count. He did a really solid job, we just made a couple of mistakes defensively that ended up costing us. They scored their run on a throw to second base that bounced off the Seton Hall player's helmet and went into centerfield. It's unlike something I've ever seen before.
"We had opportunities to score and could not convert. We must do a better job at the plate. I am confident that will happen. Back to work on Tuesday."
The highlight for Pitt was the performance of starter Blair Calvo, who, in his second appearance since undergoing Tommy John surgery, was electric. Calvo tossed 6.0 innings of work without allowing a run, surrendering just four hits and two walks and striking out eight. He has yet to allow a run through two starts.
Pitt tallied just five hits in the contest, matching the offensive production of the Pirates, as David Yanni, Nick Banman, Ron Washington Jr., Cole MacLaren and Connor Perry each recorded a hit.
Notes: The Panthers are now 27-66 all-time versus Seton Hall … Alex Amos snapped his team-best hit streak at 12 … Amos extended his reach-base streak to 24 games to pace the team.
