Pitt Baseball Bests Blue Jays in Scrimmage Opener
PITTSBURGH – The University of Pittsburgh baseball team competed in its first of two fall scrimmages Tuesday afternoon at Charles L. Cost Field, taking down the Ontario Blue Jays by a score of 15-2 in nine full innings.
The Panther offense was electric, as 10 different batters had at least one hit on the afternoon. Pitt's pitching was solid as well, limiting the Blue Jays to just two runs, while striking out nine.
The Blue Jays would take an early advantage, going up 2-0 in the first frame as starter Chris Gomez got in a bit of trouble early on. Three straight singles would load the bases with no outs before Gomez would get a strikeout to record his first out of the game. A walk would bring a runner around and a sacrifice fly would plate another to give the visitor's the 2-0 lead.
Pitt's offense would spark in the third, scoring four to take a lead it would never surrender. A one-out single by Alex Amos got the inning going, as David Yanni would put two in scoring position after a double into right. Frank Maldonado would reach on a fielder's choice to bring Amos home, cutting the Blue Jays' lead to 2-1. A double off the bat of Liam Sabino would score Yanni as Pitt tied it up. A two-RBI single to left from Ron Washington Jr. put the Panthers on top for the first time, 4-2.
The Panthers would blow things open in the sixth, plating eight to jump out to a 12-2 advantage. A walk issued to Caleb Parry and fielder's choice by Washington would put two on, as Cole MacLaren would push both into scoring position with a clean sacrifice bunt. Back-to-back singles by Nico Popa and Connor Perry scored Parry and Washington, giving the Panthers a 6-2 lead.
Perry would steal second, as Amos reached on a fielder's choice to load the bases for Yanni, who notched an infield single to score Popa. Maldonado would be struck in the back with the bases loaded, scoring Perry as the Blue Jays made a pitching change.
The inning continued after the call to the pen, as a sacrifice fly by Sabino would lead the way for a three-run jack off the bat of Parry.
Pitt didn't let up, scoring another in the seventh after Brandon Krennrich reached on an error and moved into scoring position after being hit by an errant throw, crossing home on a sacrifice fly.
In the bottom of the ninth, Pitt added two more, scoring a pair with two outs off another Yanni double as Pitt captured the 15-2 victory.
Offensively, Yanni led the way in his first game back since missing the 2017 season with a hamstring injury. The redshirt sophomore was 3-2 with three RBI and two runs scored, drawing a walk and smacking a pair of doubles. Parry would add three RBI off the homer, while Washington was 2-4 with two RBI and a run scored.
On the bump, six pitchers saw work, as Gomez got the initial call, going 2.0 innings, allowing two earned runs off three hits and two walks, fanning two. Freshman Chris Cappas would toss 2.0 innings of clean work, not allowing a hit, but walking three. Kevin Henriksen would be the third Panther pitcher of the game, throwing 1.0 inning, allowing two hits and striking out one. Matt Pidich also saw 1.0 inning of work, allowing one hit and striking out one.
Freshman Chase Smith was impressive, facing seven batters over 2.0 innings of work, allowing one hit and fanning three. Yaya Chentouf would be the final Panther pitcher of the contest, allowing one hit and striking out two in 1.0 inning.
The Panthers will wrap up fall scrimmages on Sunday, Oct. 22, hosting Lackawanna County Community College at Charles L. Cost Field. That game time will be announced at a later date.
