Riley Newell joined the University of Pittsburgh as Director of Lacrosse Operations in June of 2021 following a four-year stint as a student manager at James Madison.

As a student manager at JMU, Newell assisted the coaching staff with daily office, practice and gameday operations. He also planned the team’s yearly banquet as well as travel trips, including setting yearly budget, organizing team meals, hotels and travel itineraries. Newell also served as an athletics tutor for two years at JMU.

James Madison posted a 57-13 record with three CAA Championships and three NCAA Tournament appearances during Newell’s time with the program. In 2018, the Dukes posted a 22-1 mark en route to winning the NCAA Women’s Lacrosse National Championship.

Newell also interned with the Legacy Global Sports girls lacrosse programs, where he worked alongside the administrative staff to plan, run, and facilitate lacrosse tournaments. His role also included marketing the event, finding vendors, securing teams to play in the tournament, programming the tournament and game brackets, as well as administrating the tournament at the specific event sites throughout the east coast. In addition, Newell helped coach a lacrosse team, run tryouts, and was given the opportunity to evaluate talent for the 2019 Under Armour All American South Team.

A 2020 graduate of James Madison with a degree in Sport and Recreation Management with minors in Business and Entrepreneurship, Newell also worked for Lake House Solutions and Our Neighbors Child Non-Profit.
