Joe Lassi was elevated to Director of Social Media and Fan Engagement in August of 2021, after serving as both a Marketing Coordinator (2015-2018) and an Assistant Director of Marketing (2019-21). In his current role, Lassi coordinates all efforts across the department’s social media platforms, both in strategic development and content execution, as well as supporting team-specific social media strategy. As a member of the strategic communications team, he also serves as the primary sports information contact for the Women’s Lacrosse program.
Lassi has been at the forefront of pushing the department forward as it relates to online presence. Under his leadership and with the help of the external groups, Pitt Athletics saw a 170% increase in total yearly engagement across Facebook, Twitter and Instagram between 2020 and 2021, per college athletics digital brand strategy firm SkullSparks. He has also helped lead the charge to streamline creative workflows related to online content with the graphic design department, with the resulting output being hailed as a strong “example of cohesive visual branding across [an] entire Athletics Department”.
Additionally, Lassi serves as the sports information contact for the Women’s Lacrosse program, overseeing all aspects of program communications and promotion. In their inaugural 2022 campaign, he worked closely with regional and national media outlets covering a season full of firsts. He was a key point of communication for the ACC Network’s production efforts in the creation of All Access with Pitt Women’s Lacrosse | The Inaugural Season, a one-hour documentary that highlighted the program’s new beginnings in a year that also coincided with the 50th anniversary of Title IX.
In his previous roles, Lassi worked closely with the men’s soccer, wrestling, swimming and diving, and baseball programs. His tenures with those sports led to successive increases in attendance, continued growth of group engagement with youth sport programs, enhanced, innovative game presentation elements, including expansion of Daktronics video board systems. During his time in the marketing department, he was the lead game presentation manager for multiple ACC and NCAA championship events and worked closely on event presentation and marketing elements as part of the host committee for the 2019 NCAA Wrestling Championships hosted by the University of Pittsburgh and SportsPittsburgh.
Lassi is a University of Pittsburgh alumnus, earning a B.S. in Health and Physical Activity (2013) and a B.S.B.A. in Marketing (2015) while also serving as the Oakland Zoo President and Vice President, as well as a marketing department intern (MSOC) during his undergraduate career. A native of Camp Hill, Pa., Lassi currently resides in the Friendship neighborhood of Pittsburgh.
Beyond the Bio
Favorite place on the University of Pittsburgh campus?
The Petersen Events Center: more specifically, the Oakland Zoo. I had a great four years being a part of the games there and now I get to work a few steps away.
Favorite sports moment at Pitt?
It’s hard to choose one since I’ve been here for so long, but my favorite as a student was being in the Zoo watching us beat West Virginia in triple overtime.
What is your favorite aspect of working in Pitt’s athletic department?
I love working with all of the different people that are a part of the department.
