Joan Reed joined the University of Pittsburgh Department of Athletics in August 2024. Reed is the athletic trainer for the Panthers’ softball team. She is a 1988 graduate of Ohio University with a Bachelor of Science degree in physical education with an emphasis in athletic training.
Reed went on to earn her Master of Arts in teaching degree from the University of Louisville in 1990. She served as a graduate assistant athletic trainer for varsity field hockey, swimming and diving, women’s soccer and basketball teams.
Reed brings over 30 years of experience working in the sports medicine field. Prior to joining the Panthers staff, she worked at UPMC as a clinical athletic trainer at the Freddie Fu Sports Medicine Center. She spent most of her career in Atlanta, Georgia. She was Assistant Director of Athletics for Sports Medicine at Emory University for 17 years, the Head Athletic Trainer at Decatur High School for 4 years and Clinical Assistant to John Xerogeanes MD the Chief of Sports Medine at Emory Healthcare for the last 3 years. Reed has volunteered at the USOC in Colorado Springs, the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta and has 27 years with United States Soccer Federation.
She is a native of Steubenville, Ohio and recently moved back to the area to be close to her family.
Beyond the Bio
What is your favorite thing to do in the city of Pittsburgh?
I have really enjoyed exploring the city parks with my dog and meeting up with my family for dinner. Pittsburgh has so many wonderful restaurant options!

Hobbies outside of work?
I enjoy spending quality time with my family and friends, hiking with my dog and traveling.
