Casey McAlpine, MS, RD, LD, returned to the University of Pittsburgh Department of Athletics in August 2026 as a sports dietitian, working with baseball, softball, swimming and diving, and women’s soccer. Before joining Pitt’s Sports Nutrition Department as a full-time staff member, McAlpine served as a sports dietitian fellow at Pitt from 2024–2025, working with baseball, softball, and swimming and diving. As a fellow, she was awarded Gold Standard Administrator of the Year by Men’s Swimming and Diving. She is a registered dietitian-nutritionist with the Commission on Dietetic Registration and a licensed dietitian-nutritionist with the Pennsylvania State Board of Nursing.
Prior to her return to Pitt, McAlpine was a performance nutrition specialist at the University of Alabama from 2025–2026, working with gymnastics, rowing, and softball. She also brings experience in clinical nutrition from her work as an acute care clinical dietitian at Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital–Milton in Milton, Mass., and St. Elizabeth’s Medical Center in Boston, Mass., where she worked from 2023–2024.
McAlpine earned her master of science in nutrition and health promotion from Simmons University in Boston, Mass., in 2024. While at Simmons, she also completed a certificate in sports nutrition and her dietetic internship program, including a sports nutrition rotation with Boston College football. McAlpine earned her bachelor of science in nutrition and food science from the University of Maryland in 2022. During her time at UMD, she served as a sports nutrition volunteer with Maryland football in 2019 and as a strength and conditioning intern with Olympic sports in 2022. She also completed a strength and conditioning internship with Cressey Sports Performance in 2021.
McAlpine is originally from Boxborough, Mass., and currently resides in Pittsburgh.
What is your favorite place to eat?
Pittsburgh has so many great restaurants, but my go-to is always Tocayo in Shadyside.
What is your favorite thing to do in the city of Pittsburgh?
My favorite thing to do in Pittsburgh is walk around the different neighborhoods and discover new shops, restaurants, and coffee shops to try.
What do you love most about working in athletics?
I love helping young adult athletes build the skills and knowledge not only to fuel their bodies for success during their collegiate athletic careers, but also to give them the nutrition foundation and tools they need to support their health and wellness throughout the rest of their lives.
