Brian Templien became part of the University of Pittsburgh Athletic Department in August of 2013 as a video director. He was brought in to create a video department to support the coaches, staff, and student athletes with all of their video needs. Throughout his time at Pitt, he has executed a video workflow and strategy for the 12 sports that meets their individual needs. He has also worked with facilities to install state of the art multi camera capture systems at the Petersen Sports Complex, Fitzgerald Field House and Trees Complex. In his time here, he has formed relationships with all the coaches and staff and has become a valued associate with his increasing knowledge when it comes to video as well as way to get projects done in a timely fashion while working within a budget.
Before Templien arrived, only five teams out of the 12 were using video in some magnitude, now all 12 film every home and away event in high definition. The video is then stored and categorized for easy access for coaches, staff and athletes. Templien and his department has overseen the implementation of replay solutions for volleyball, baseball, and wrestling. The University of Pittsburgh has become a trendsetter with how to implement video for each individual sport to fit their specific needs. In the summer of 2019 he was asked to be a key speaker during the Hudl summit in Las Vegas, speaking to other video directors explaining his methods of meeting the video needs of so many different sports. He is always looking for new innovative ways to provide each sport with the video they need to gain any advantage possible.
Templien played a key role in the installation of an artificial intelligent camera system at the Petersen Event Center and Ambrose Urbanic Field. Pitt became the first collegiate basketball and soccer teams in the United States to use this camera system. The camera system uses AI to follow the athletes without a camera operator, it can also capture up to 12 angles which cover the entire field of play. Templien has provided his input during renovations of facilities when it comes to technology and video needs.
Previously Templien worked seven years in the NFL with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers as a Video Assistant. While he worked with Tampa he learned the ins and outs of the athletic video. He was involved with the transition into digital video age. He filmed practices and games, provided players and coaches with cut ups, worked team meetings and was part of the game day staff for all home and away games. He was a crucial part in being one of the first teams in the NFL to use Ipads for coaches, staff, and player video. Throughout his time with the Buccaneers he developed countless relationships with coaches, players and staff.
Templien was born in North Platte, Neb., he moved to Omaha where he spent five years of his life. In 1990 he moved to St. Petersburg, Fla., where he grew up and visits his family and childhood friends there as much as possible. He relocated to Pittsburgh in 2013 when the University of Pittsburgh hired him. He has made Pittsburgh his home; he enjoys many aspects of the city the great people, sports, food and the city as a whole.
