Jos Smith is in his second season with Pitt swimming & diving as an assistant swimming coach and the program's director of men's recruiting.
In his first year with the Panthers, both teams took impressive steps forward as a total 20 school records were broken, including 12 men's program bests and eight women's school records. The Pitt men's swimming & diving team also posted its highest points total in program history at the 2017 ACC Championships, placing 10th with 513.0 points.
Working specifically with the distance swimmers, Smith aided in the development of Pitt record-breaking swimmers Amanda Richey and Aaron Sett. Both broke the Panthers' school records in the 1,650 free during the 2016-17 season, with Sett placing ninth at the ACC Championships with a Pitt-best time of 15:11.65 and Richey advancing to the NCAA Championships as a result of her top time in the event of 16:04.25.
Smith came to Pittsburgh after a year as the assistant swim coach at the University of North Carolina at Wilmington. In Wilmington, he coached all of the specialty groups for both the men’s and women’s teams, primarily headlining the distance squad. He helped coach two conference finalists and a school-record setter, in addition to helping with recruiting efforts.
Before joining the Wilmington staff, he served as both a volunteer and assistant coach with the University of Georgia. With the Bulldogs, he assisted the top-ranked women’s team and fifth-ranked men’s team in the country, lending assistance with both recruiting and coaching efforts. While a member of the Bulldogs’ coaching staff, the women’s team captured NCAA team titles in 2013 and '14.
Originally from Milledgeville, Ga., Smith has also worked with the Athens Bulldog Swim Club and served as the head coach of Swim Macon in his home state.
Prior to his coaching career, Smith was an accomplished swimmer and a four-time NCAA All-American for the University of Florida. In his time with the Gators, he led the team to a second-place finish at the SEC Championships and a fifth-place mark at the NCAA Championships. Individually, he competed in both the SEC Championships and NCAA Championships and, along with his four All-American honors, was also a two-time SEC Academic Honor Roll honoree and competed in the 2008 Olympic Trials in the 50 and 100 free.
Smith earned a bachelor’s degree in animal science from Florida in May 2010.
