- Title:
- Assistant Coach
Ronald Ramón returned to his alma mater in April of 2026 as an assistant coach for the Pitt men’s basketball program, bringing with him a strong blend of coaching experience, professional playing success, and a deep understanding of Panther basketball.
A 2008 Pitt graduate and former standout guard, Ramón most recently spent the 2025-26 season as an assistant coach at Iona under Head Coach Dan Geriot. The Gaels went 18-14, their best record since 2022-23, with an emphasis on making and defending the deep ball. The team ranked among the top 50 in three-pointers made in the country, while also ranking No. 31 nationally in three-point defense.
Prior to his season at Iona, Ramón spent five years on staff at Fordham, where he helped guide one of the most significant program turnarounds in recent college basketball. During his tenure (2020–25), the Rams posted multiple historic milestones, highlighted by a 25-8 campaign in 2022-23, a third-place Atlantic 10 finish, and a run to the conference tournament semifinals. Fordham also recorded consecutive Atlantic 10 Tournament victories and posted a 14-win improvement in Ramon’s first season on staff. The Rams’ defense ranked among the nation’s best in 2020-21, finishing 41st nationally in adjusted defensive efficiency, the highest rating in program history.
Ramón began his coaching career at Pitt in 2019 as assistant director of basketball operations, where he worked closely with the program in areas of recruiting, alumni relations, and day-to-day operations.
As a player at Pitt from 2004-08, Ramón was a key contributor to one of the most successful eras in program history. The Panthers compiled a 101-35 record during his career, advancing to four NCAA Tournaments and winning the 2008 Big East Tournament title at Madison Square Garden. Ramón finished his career with 1,096 points and ranks among Pitt’s all-time leaders in three-point shooting, sitting fourth in made three-pointers (233) and seventh in percentage (.395). He earned Big East All-Freshman Team honors in 2005 and shot a career-best 45.1 percent from three-point range as a junior.
Following his collegiate career, Ramón played 11 professional seasons throughout South America, competing in Argentina, Brazil, Uruguay, and Venezuela. He also represented the Dominican Republic National Team for a decade, competing in multiple international tournaments, including the FIBA World Cups in 2014 and 2019.
Off the court, Ramón is widely respected for his passion for mentorship and player development. He and his wife, Reba, a former Pitt softball All-Big East performer, are the parents of two sons, Ronald Jr. and Raiden.
