Michael Craig is in his second season with the Pitt football program as a defensive quality control assistant.
Prior to Pitt, Craig spent a decade as a defensive coordinator between Duquesne University (2021-14), California University of Pennsylvania (2016-21) and Saint Francis University (2014-16). He also served as a special teams coordinator/defensive backs coach in his first stint with Duquesne (2010-14), as well as serving in a number of assistant coaching roles at Saint Francis from 2006-09.
Under Craig, Duquesne’s defense saw 10 players receive All-NEC honors (2022-23), ranked top three in the conference in seven defensive categories (2022) and coached the 2022 NEC Defensive Player of the Year.
In 2021, Craig helped Cal U finish 21st in the American Football Coaches Association Top 25. The Vulcans, who finished with one loss for just the third time in a half-century, ranked among the Top 10 nationally in total defense, scoring defense and rushing defense under Craig’s tutelage.
At his alma mater, Saint Francis, he helped the Red Flash finish second in the Northeast Conference in 2015. SFU led the NEC and ranked eighth in the FCS in passing defense that season.
A native of Imperial, Pa., Craig played linebacker for the Red Flash from 2002-06 and registered 227 tackles and 31.5 TFL during his career, totaling over 45 stops in every season.
He earned his bachelor’s degree in accounting from Saint Francis in 2006 and completed a master’s degree in human resource management at SFU in 2014. He resides in Pittsburgh with his wife, Mame, their son, Francis, and daughters, Mary Margaret and Claudia.
