Derik Abbott enters his first season as an offensive graduate assistant on the Pitt football staff.
Abbott owns experience at the prep, college and professional levels of football.
The past four seasons (2019-22) he coached quarterbacks and worked with the passing game at the U.S. Coast Guard Academy. His efforts helped produce the 2022 NEWMAC Rookie of the Year in freshman wide receiver Broock Desta, who compiled 61 receptions for 752 yards and eight touchdowns.
Abbott completed a coaching fellowship with the Tennessee Titans during the NFL franchise’s 2022 training camp, serving as an assistant to the quarterbacks coach.
In 2019, he was an offensive coordinator at Olympia High School in his native Orlando, Fla.
Abbott spent the 2017-18 seasons at Lindenwood University. He initially was a quarterback for the Lions’ 2017 squad before serving the program as an offensive quality control and assistant quarterback coach the following season.
Abbott is a 2016 graduate of nearby Robert Morris University with a bachelor’s degree in communications. He was a four-year quarterback for the Colonials and in 2014 orchestrated the biggest comeback in program history when he rallied RMU from an 18-point deficit to defeat Central Connecticut State, 27-24. His 57.1 completion percentage that season marked the second-highest in school annals.
Abbott was a record-breaking quarterback at Freedom High School in Orlando, earning All-Central Florida accolades. He finished his career as one of only 12 players in Central Florida history to eclipse 5,000 career passing yards.
