Western Pennsylvania native Alex Kline enters his third season on the Pitt football staff. After spending two years as assistant director of player personnel (2022-23), Kline was promoted to the Panthers’ director of college scouting in 2024.
This is actually Kline’s second tour with the Panthers. He previously served as an offensive quality control assistant during the 2018 season, when Pitt captured the ACC Coastal Division title.
Kline returned to Pittsburgh following stints at the University of Memphis (2022) and University of Akron (2019-21).
At Memphis, he served as director of player personnel, playing an instrumental role in the Tigers’ recruiting efforts.
Kline served in a variety of increasingly elevated positions at Akron. During the 2021 season, he coached the Zips’ wide receivers and also was the program’s recruiting coordinator.
At Akron, he oversaw the development of receiver Konata Mumpfield, a 2021 Freshman All-American who is now a senior receiver at Pitt.
Kline’s first collegiate coaching appointment was at Saint Vincent College (2014-17). Initially a graduate assistant, he was promoted to offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach for his final two years in Latrobe. Under his orchestration the Bearcats’ passing game ranked among the most productive at the NCAA Division III level and set multiple school records.
Kline was a standout offensive performer himself as a player, earning All-Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) accolades as a wide receiver at John Carroll University. Playing under Coach Tom Arth, now the Pittsburgh Steelers’ quarterback coach, Kline was a team captain and voted the Blue Streaks’ Most Valuable Wide Receiver.
Kline earned his bachelor’s degree in business management from John Carroll in 2014 and a master’s degree in management sciences from Saint Vincent in 2016.
A native of nearby Glenshaw, Pa., Kline was a prep standout at North Catholic, where he lettered in three sports and was a two-time WPIAL champion in basketball.
