Chris Hanks, a veteran of the sports medicine profession with more than 30 years of experience, enters his fifth season as head athletic trainer for the Pitt football program.
Hanks’ Pitt appointment in 2021 marked a return to his native Western Pennsylvania. He grew up in nearby Plum Borough and graduated from Plum High School.
Hanks joined the Panthers after serving the previous five seasons (2016-20) as the head football athletic trainer at Wake Forest.
Prior to working with the Demon Deacons, Hanks spent 15 seasons (2000-14) in the National Football League working with the Chicago Bears. He served as head athletic trainer his final three years. During Hanks’ tenure, the Bears won the 2006 NFC championship and advanced to Super Bowl XLI.
A 1989 graduate of Ohio University, Hanks earned his bachelor’s degree in physical education with a special emphasis in athletic training and athletic administration. He completed the Master of Sports Management program at the University of Richmond in 1992.
While completing his graduate work, Hanks served as a graduate assistant for Richmond Athletics and additionally worked as a trainer with the Richmond Braves, a minor league baseball club that was the Triple-A International League affiliate of the Atlanta Braves.
Hanks would have a decade-long tenure with the University of Richmond (1990-2000), ultimately elevating to head athletic trainer and overseeing health care for the Spiders’ 21 Division I intercollegiate sports.
Hanks and his wife, Tracy, have two daughters, Clare and Aerin.
He is a member of the National Athletic Trainers’ Association (NATA).
