PITTSBURGH — Pitt Football returned to the field Monday for its 10th training camp practice following Saturday's first scrimmage. Head Coach Pat Narduzzi, linebacker DeMarco Ward and quarterback Mason Heintschel met with the media.
Here are five takeaways:
1. Panthers Ahead of Schedule
Pitt completed approximately 110 to 120 live snaps and extensive special teams work during Saturday's scrimmage. The offense ultimately won in a two-minute situation after the second unit earned a first down and kicked a field goal.
"It couldn't have been a cleaner scrimmage from a head coach's perspective," Narduzzi said. "I feel like we're ahead of where we expected to be after the first scrimmage."
Despite the encouraging performance, Narduzzi stressed that the Panthers still have work to do during the "dog days" of camp.
2. Heintschel Showing Consistency
Heintschel continued his steady play during the scrimmage, delivering several impressive throws.
"Mason was sharp," Narduzzi said. "He made some plays and a couple of big-time throws."
Heintschel said his command of protections and defensive looks has improved significantly since last season.
"I think it's night and day," he said. "Being in the offense for more than a year and understanding what Coach Bell wants and likes to do makes it easier for me to get guys lined up."
3. Offense Creating Explosive Plays
Cataurus Hicks and Censere Lee a couple names who created opportunities downfield, while freshman running back Damon Ferguson Jr. broke a run of approximately 50 yards.
"Damon is impressive," Narduzzi said. "He's going to play for us this year."
Heintschel praised Ferguson's ability to learn the offense quickly and play without hesitation.
"He's doing a great job of picking it up and playing fast," Heintschel said. "He's a playmaker, for sure."
4. Defense Hunting Takeaways
Pitt's defense also produced several impact plays. Shawn Lee Jr. recorded a turnover, while Cameron Lindsey continued displaying his ability to force fumbles.
"Cam Lindsey continues to punch the ball out," Narduzzi said. "He's one of those ballhawks who has a knack for it. It's hard to teach."
Ward said the defense took a step forward Saturday but must continue improving its situational awareness.
5. Ward Adds Versatility
Ward has worked primarily at STAR while also taking snaps at MONEY. His experience playing safety at Memphis allows him to contribute against both the run and pass.
"I have the frame of a linebacker, but I'm also able to cover," Ward said. "You have to have the footwork to play both the run and the pass."
He also praised the depth and competition throughout Pitt's linebacker room.
"Everybody wants to play, and everybody is hungry," Ward said. "Everybody wanting to get better makes me want to get better, too."
